To start off our journey, we first had to get to the airport. Not as simple as it might seem when you're dropping your car off to be repaired and the airport is at least a half an hour away. Fortunately, we were able to secure a ride from a friend from Devin's school/our church and he simply followed us to the repair shop and then dropped us off at O'Hare. But, as is typical in life, there were at least a few hiccups along the way.
First and foremost, right when we were getting ready to leave, Kairi disappeared. We looked everywhere in the house for her, calling her name. I about had a heart attack. Then Devin thought to check the garage, where she is oft to escape to (but not usually unnoticed), and she came right in as soon as he opened the door. Phew! Then, as we're backing out, we realize our GPS and CD's are all still in the car. Not wanting to have these misplaced during the repair process, we pulled back into the garage (it was raining) and took them out (along with the booster seat that I have for the girl I watch). Our last adventure was getting to the correct terminal at the airport. A few wrong turns and corrections later, we made it with plenty of time to spare.
Next great adventure for the day? The nudey scanners! In all honesty they aren't that bad. Basically you do the same thing you normally do to go through the metal detector (remove metal, shoes, electronics, etc.); then instead of going through a metal detector, you proceed to the nudey scanner. The scanner consists of 2 big box things that you stand between. They have foot marks to indicate where you should place your feet (shoulder width apart). Now comes the only awkward part. You have to stand with both of your hands above your head, palms facing forward, and hold that pose for a few seconds. If you didn't feel and look like an idiot, it wouldn't be that bad at all. The people looking at the scans are in another area of the airport, they have no way of saving the images, and the picture is deleted as soon as they give you the okay. Funny thing? Devin didn't pass the nudey scanner! He had to have his cargo shorts patted down (fabric was probably too thick or something).
After making it through security, we proceeded to our terminal to find some seats and get some food! I permitted Devin to get a McDonald's breakfast (I do not believe their "food" is good for you in any way, shape, or form) and I got a french toast bagel (yum!) and a McDonald's smoothie (I am willing to have their drinks, ice cream, and salads as they don't involve "meat" or oils of any kind). Meanwhile, we're waiting for our flight. Turns out the flight that was supposed to land in O'Hare and become our plane, got cancelled. They had to scramble to find another plane for us to ride and as a result, our flight was of course delayed (O'Hare has the 2nd most delays in the country, after JFK in NY). One ridiculously long flight later, and we were in Seattle!
We snagged some grub from a kiosk (we walked out of security before getting some decent food), got our luggage, and made it right on our shuttle with only a few minutes (and seats) to spare. For inquiring minds, I had a parfait and a slice of banana bread and Devin had a meatloaf sandwich that gave him terrible bad breath.
2.5 hrs and some naps later, Karly and Grandma LeOla met us at our drop-off point; and our vacation officially began!
