A White Coat and A Numb Toe

Saturday was Devin's White Coat Ceremony! Also known as his rite of passage, this is a ceremony traditionally held at the end of the first year of medical school where students are rewarded for their hard work with a white lab coat that signifies that they are now ready, and allowed, to work in clinics. It's a pretty big deal :)

It was much like a mini graduation ceremony, with the students filing in to music and being seated separately, and proud family members flashing photos and taking video. They had a great speaker who was the 19th ever Podiatrist in the armed forces (this was in the 1960's) and who had to fight for the right to be recognized by the medical community in his town in order to be allowed to perform surgery at the hospitals, request braces, or even order medical supplies. He spoke on being a wind changer and the importance of having integrity, and I very much enjoyed his speech. After another speech about the privilege and responsibility of laying your hands on someone to heal them, all of the students lined up and were given their coats. I was so proud of my sweet husband!

Best part of that day -- the food! After the ceremony there were yummy appetizers and awesome desserts! There were amazing creme puffs that were way more creme than puff, cannolis, brownies, cheesecake, lemon creme bars, cookies, cookie dough truffles, chocolate dipped strawberries, eclairs, and these really awesome chocolate oreo creme fudge bar things. Woot! Our friends asked us out to dinner but we were so full we couldn't go! We did however go out later that night to TGIFridays, where we enjoyed some yummy steak kabobs (me) and sirloin (Devin).

In other podiatry news, Devin gave and received his first toe injection! On Monday he had a workshop where they practiced numbing each others big toes. Both Devin and his partner achieved success and Devin came home with a numb toe. :)
